The main opposition party, CPN-UML, on Friday, decided to protest the Constitution amendment bill the government is filing from both the House and the streets. A Standing Committee meeting of the party held at Chairman KP Sharma Oli’s residence in Balkot of Bhaktapur took a decision to this effect.A statement issued by the party Secretary and Chief of the Publicity Department, Yogesh Bhattarai, said the bid to amend Constitution would block successful holding of three elections, which the Constitution requires to be held within next 14 months. “It is very sad and objectionable that the government is trying to be involved in unnecessary, inappropriate and harmful activiies by deviating from its main responsibility (of elections),” the statement read. Meanwhile, the party reiterated that the Constitution could be amended to meet demands of the nation; but not to take it toward any kind of division. UML Secretary Bhattarai told reporters after the meeting that the party, however, in principle accepted that Constitution could be amended if any need be. -
